Russell Sinnett is the newest member of the Cossitt Law legal team. He is a Fort Collins native, licensed to practice law in Colorado and Wyoming, both federal and state courts, and has been practicing law exclusively as a litigator and trial attorney for over 21 years. Russell’s broad experience in trial law and his generally diverse background provide Cossitt Law clients with solid and well-rounded legal advice in not just family matters, but any parallel legal issues which may arise.
Russell has practiced in both civil and criminal law for large firms and as a solo practitioner. Russell has direct experience handling family law matters, as well as other types of civil cases, from small claims cases in night court, to multi-million dollar, complex litigation of industrial accidents, explosions, fires, asbestos contamination, and other disasters.
Coming from a construction family, Russell has also handled construction litigation from small lien matters to construction defect claims valued at $20 million. Prior to law school, Russell was a licensed Colorado Real Estate Broker. Russell has accordingly handled many real estate related matters both in and out of court. These are in addition other cases involving torts (i.e., negligence, wrongful death, assault, personal injury), commercial litigation, and insurance defense.
Approximately one-third of Russell’s trial experience is in criminal law. He has represented criminal clients in cases from traffic matters and DUI’s to white collar crimes, serious violent felonies, and first degree murder. He has often worked as a trial consultant to other small firms or solo practitioners preparing for criminal trials. For Cossitt Law clients, Russell is a valuable resource to evaluate criminal issues which often arise in the context of family law.
Russell received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (marketing major) from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1992, with honors. Russell obtained his juris doctor degree in law from the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida in 1999, with honors and as a member of the Moot Court Board (approximately the top 7%).
Russell’s community involvement includes his past membership on the board of directors for the Poudre School District Foundation from 2002-2008, a legacy donor to Crossroads Safehouse for Battered Women and Children, and regularly serves to provide free legal services and advice to veterans and low-income citizens at clinics across Colorado and Wyoming.
In his personal life, Russell pursues many creative interests—mainly music, art, digital media, and filmmaking. Some of these interests stem from his diverse personal and professional background. He started college as a piano composition major before switching into the college of business.
Following his graduation from CU Boulder, Russell moved to Los Angles and for three and a half years, worked in motion picture production for companies like Disney, Avnet/Kerner, Columbia Pictures, Saban Entertainment (“Power Rangers”), and Music Television (“MTV”). Starting as a basic production assistant, Russell later worked in various crew positions such as props, locations, assistant directing, and even as a stuntman in three movies. In one movie he was a stunt driver.
Russell continues writing music; classical music and symphony pieces are his favorite projects. In the music studio in his home, Russell plays a wide range of music on piano, synthesizers, drums, saxophone, harmonica, and his newest instrument: guitar.
